This project for the new San Juan Diego church fully preserves the existing architecture of the place – the old Lindavista Cinema and the Lindavista Lions International club house. An asymmetric barrel vault frames these preserved eclectic architecture, adding a new modern thin layer to reuse the main hall of the old cinema as the new church. This curvilinear square symbolically represents an abstraction of San Juan Diego´s clothing, where the image of the Virgin Mary appeared, according to the story. Such story is reenacted everyday within the building via sun lighting: A large reflected image of the Virgin moves within the roof as it strategically mirrors a golden medallion. This moving sunlight image of the Virgin moves throughout the day making it constantly recur. As this illumination changes also during the year, any person visiting the church has a different experience with such apparition, considering the time of the day, season, and his or her location at the hall. The new project is therein the background for the cathartic contemplation of the apparition of the Virgin Mary.
